Gemotions

The attic air hung thick and dusty, heavy on Amelia's chest. Sunlight sliced through a gap in the boarded-up window, illuminating swirling motes of dust that danced in the beam. She tugged at the cardboard box, the muscles in her arms screaming a protest. Another box to sort. Another piece of her parents’ life she was obligated to sift through, months after their passing.

She sank to the floor, leaning against the cold, damp wall. A thin sheet of paper, yellowed with age, lay atop the box. Her mother’s familiar handwriting, graceful and precise, covered the page. It was a letter, addressed to her mother's employer, a law firm. The date was from thirty years ago.

Amelia’s eyes scanned the words, recognizing a quiet, simmering frustration. Her mother’s voice, a ghost of her former self, resonated in her mind. Lines like, "I find myself struggling to maintain the expected standard of diligence," and "I am no longer able to give my all to my work." It felt strangely familiar. Amelia sighed and ran a hand through her hair. The weight of her own demanding job pressed heavily on her shoulders. Perhaps she could understand her mother better, after all.
